It’s been a painful two years of waiting since the 2011 Geneva study but finally, Alfa Romeo has revealed the first official images of the Alfa Romeo 4C have been published and you can expect that the Italian brand will go large with this rear-wheel drive two-seater. This 4C will mark the brand’s return to America and will make its world debut in the upcoming Geneva Auto Show on March 5.

Designed by the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, the 4C immediately brings to mind some of the traditional iconic models which have left a significant mark in the history of the Brand. Above all others, in terms of dimensional and layout similarities, one stands out in particular: the 33 Stradale.
The 4C uses a 1.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (the 4 in 4C representing the car’s cylinder count). In the Alfa Giulietta Cloverleaf, this engine produces 232bhp, though the 4C gets a 25kg-lighter version that’s cast aluminium rather than iron. It also gets direct injection and is linked to Alfa’s TCT twin-dry clutch transmission rather than a traditional manual gearbox. Steering-wheel paddle-shifters will still allow control of its six ratios, though.

Having debuted on the MiTo and now in the Giuliettas, the Alfa’s DNA drive select switch makes an appearance and has the ability to change the throttle, steering and gearbox settings is not exactly a novelty. Its fourth mode that is added to the Dynamic, Natural and All Weather that are standard on other models, though, is: developed specifically for the 4C and aptly named Race it is, according to the company, designed to enhance the handling characteristics on track driving.
Measuring 4000mm long, 2000mm wide and 1180mm high, the 4C is shorter, wider and more squat than a Lotus Evora, Porsche Cayman or Toyota GT86. The 4C, which will go on sale later this year and mark Alfa Romeo’s return to the U.S. market, will be manufactured (in very limited numbers, if our insider report is correct) at Maserati’s plant.
